Professor Gilman had a huge smile on his face as he turned the binder containing my thesis toward me. His assessment of the work so far had been stuck to the front of it with a piece of tape. “This is fantastic work, Jolie. And with the way you’re pushing for this initiative, I believe it will actually work.”

My father wasn’t the only one who had goals in life, and I was making purposeful strides toward mine. While Dad trumpeted his plan to build group homes throughout the city for at-risk youth, I reserved mine for less public avenues, starting with schools and counseling centers. My ideas revolved around meeting children on an individual level and helping them with immediate physical and emotional needs. My thought was, if we had trained individuals in every school system, children would be less likely to slip through the cracks and be forgotten.

The pilot program could be tested in a microenvironment, and if it worked it could be implemented on a larger scale. Not only did my thesis outline similar programs done in other countries or states, but it also detailed the step-by-step process for implementation and execution. I never wanted to hear of another young person who took their own life or fell into drug addiction or prostitution as a last resort.

“Thank you, Professor Gilman. I have worked so hard on this, and I just want to get it right. I’m not even thinking of this as a final grade or the credit I need for graduation. I really plan to push this initiative and make it a reality.” I slid the binder off the table into my lap and then hugged it to my chest. Even my work in his classroom should have shown him how passionate I was about helping others.

“Well, you’ll be happy to know that I’ve shown the dean, and he agrees with you. Something must be done. So, we’ve decided when your thesis is complete, we will come together as a team—all of the staff here—and refine your plan to begin the process of testing it right here on campus. And when we have proven it works for young adults, we will back you all the way until your dream is a reality.”

My stomach fluttered and I felt warm all over. “Really?” I asked, shaking my head. A soft chuckle escaped and I grinned. “You honestly want to do that?”

“Jolie, your drive and passion in this classroom is unrivaled. I’ve never had a student with such potential.” He tapped a finger on his desk which was littered with papers. Dust plumed up in the air around his hand, dancing and swirling in the air current he created. “You are more than just smarts on paper. You embody your passions, and when someone as special as you comes along, those who have come before would be stupid not to get behind you and push. You are going to change things in this city, perhaps across the state, and maybe even the country.
